Anyone who has been to my house (only a few) know I keep my tanks water level 2 - 2 1/2 inches below the rim.

I did this for the following reasons.

1. To benefit gas exchange.
2. The Piranha in the beginning was a jumper.
3. I use AquaClears which I use to air the tank I.e. number 1.
4. For some fish to create current.
5. Equipement even though marked as for tall tanks (mines 18" tall) never seem to fit.

This is a method I have been using on all my tanks.

But everytime someone comes to my house they ask the question "Why is your tank so low".

I will admit my tanks would look so much better if I filled them to the top.

But I am curious what do people here do generally.

My main concern is low oxygen levels.

same here

x5. all the way to the top. water below the rim looks ugly and makes it seems as though the tank isnt maintained

Actually, I think having less space at the top is better for air exchange. It ensures that air pumped into the aquarium is lost quicker, versus the possiblity of the same air getting trapped for longer periods.

But great topic! I'm interested in safety factors: are the aquariums meant to be filled up to the very top?

I keep mine as full as possible with out touching the glass. This serves a couple purposes for me:

1 the extra moisture on the glass(right under light) helps promote algae growth- self sustaining fish food!

2 - its easier for the fish to eat said algae

3- MORE WATER!

4- Less air in tank means quicker turn over from air pumps

i should add, the most people that run sumps with overflow dont really have an option, the tank has to be full in order for the overflow to work...
