Hey guys. I have a 90 gallon aquarium set-up in my bedroom. The tank has an AC - 110 and some random whisper filter on it, 2 AC powerheads (AC 50's i believe), a 6in airstone with pretty good air pump, and a bare bottom. The Tank currently has five 4-5in Peacock Bass (monos), and a 6 or so inch silver arro. The issue I'm running into is that i seem to have a film on the surface of the water, and the film is basically only visible if you look at the surface of the water from below the surface. Ive read that its just decaying organic matter, and that its not particularly harmful in a freshwater set up, but with the tank being in my bedroom, Its incredibly annoying and it bothers me a lot. I was thinking protein skimmer, as was my friend who's experienced with saltwater tanks, but I've read that it just doesn't work in fresh (something to do with the surface tension of the water maybe?). Do you guys have any suggestions for me to get rid of this? Thanks in advance for any info.

I was just going to post the exact same thing because I had asked the same question before. I saw it here http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.c...x=mode+matchallpartial&Np=1&pc=1&N=2004&Nty=1
but my lfs had it for sale. I connected it to my smallest canister (magnum) and it works well. The only thing is that you have to play around with it because it does make noise sucking in water and air but it works great. Hope this helps, The Doctor

I guess you can use another type of filter. Just use a hose connected to the intake tube. Make sure you put the skimmer far away from the filter so the tube won't kink.

I saw you have a couple of power heards, you can use one of those.

I appreciate all the info guys. I've got a surface skimmer for my AC-110 on its way. I also took one of my powerheads off the bottom and added an airline to agitate the surface more which seemed to help considerably. I should be able to look at my tank now without getting sad. Thanks again.

As an alternative, you can also use tissues to soak up the surface film
