i just started a planted 10 gallon tank with a diy co2. There is a film residue on top of the tank from the plants, (it sorta looks like gasoline on cement, if this makes since.) Is this ok? or normal? Any info would help. thanks

Howdy,

it's most likely just bacteria. Increasing surface agitation will take care of it. You can also remove it by putting a dry paper towel on the water surface and picking it up again. It will soak the film up, and you can dispose of it. But it will come back if you do not increase surface movement.

Won't agitating the surface increase CO2 loss? I've noticed the same thing in my tank but I've set my filter (in tank) low enough where it doesn't move the surface water at all.

Surface agitation will decrease the amount of co2 in your aquarium, but that is easily fixed by putting more co2 into the tank.
