I have a 29 gallon fowlr.
I'm running two 20 to 40 gallon whisper powerfilters on the back and an instant ocean "up to 100 gallon" protein skimmer .. i have noticed ever since i added new live rock in my tank about a month ago i have not been able to get rid of the film on the top of the water. How often should water changes really be done on a 29 gallon . and is there any secrets in making my skimmer work better??!!!

do you have live sand as well, i know with live sand certain brands will actually cause that film. its something beneficial but i cant remember what it actually does. i think it looks bad personally lol. mine did that for a few months of setup and then went away. you can do more water changes if you want but dont do so much were it doesnt make any sense. i would only do a max of 5 gallons a change on that size tank, unless your having a huge ammonia problem.

did you get your rock pre-cured or are you curing it yourself. do you have any fish in it yet?? also how often do you test your water? the two filters are fine but you need to change the filter pad in them often. I would test the water and see what all your parameters are and then do water changes based on the test. keep us posted.....

I would keep up with a weekly water change, but you may also want to try putting a powerhead near the surface to break it up. i had the same problem in my 20L, so I put a powerhead maybe an inch below the surface and it broke it up and the filter sucked it up. Id also try putting some filter floss in the whispers to cat5ch some of the bigger particles, and trying some ChemiPure, it does a nice job of clearing up the water. What media is currently in the filter?

I just used an oxygen pump or bubller and it work for me.

Try a surface skimmer. It's just a biological build-up; oils, waste, and fine particles. Your filters sound fine for that size, try more surface agitation, and do water changes 20% weekly, with substrate siphoning to make sure you aerate the bed, allowing gases and micro-detritus to escape. Also make sure you are not over-feeding or over-dosing your supplements. These too can cause "oil slicks".

Thanks guys!!...i have one of those powerheads that move back and forth..ill try putting that toward the top... also this tank has actually been going for about 2 years then i was moved to my new house ... i transported all the water over and didnt lose a bit.. i did add more sand which somone did say that caused a film on their water too.. ill keep you updated on the situation so maybe it can be fixed sooner!!

i have the same problems
i made my filter blow up
so theyre was more water current
or u could use oxygen pump

You blew up your filter?

Why are you guys calling it an oxygen pump? Is it attached to a bottle of oxygen?
and by making my filter blow up
i meant rearanging some parts to make my filter shoot up so i would get water flow without an OXYGEN PUMP
any idiot would understand wat i was aiming for saying
