I was wondering what it the best type of filter to get. Also i wanted to know the best sand to get. Last i was wondering is sand gets in your filter will that mess it up??

I think the best type of filter is a wet/dry. They are hard to get messed up due to sand. The overflow makes it almost impossible for sand to get into it and even if it does it will be caught by the prefilter.

I know some will disagree and some will agree but IMO pool filter sand is the way to go. I like the results that i've got with it.

I was lokking at the wet dry filter but I was wondering if you had to do anything specific to your tank or can you have a reg. tank.(lots o tubes lol)

you can have a regular tank and just use an overflow, or even make your own overflow.
search DIY wet dry and you'll come up with all kinds of stuff

yeah..pool filter is the way to go...

Howdy,

I have never had anything but canisters, and I have never had any problems. When you have canisters and sand, make sure the filter is designed with the impeller positioned on top of the canister (e.g. Eheim). That way, sand will settle on the bottom and never reach the pump...

BTW: I have playsand  Great for planted tanks, since it still contains some clay.

the best filter for me is wet/dry... it has less work with regards to changing filter pads. i also have canister but i need to disassemble it and put it back. wet/dry you just take the old one and slide the new one.

i like gravel more... fine sand can easily be taken by your filter... i do agree... if you have a wet/dry it is almost impossible to have the sand go to the impeller. if you do have a canister i would suggest to get a pre-filter and put it on the intake going to the canister to avoid cleaning or even damaging your impeller.

both wet/dry and canister works great for me. but i'm a little lazy in terms of cleaning the canister.:D i like it quick and easy.. but theirs no easy way unless you want to spend more $$$. (if you do overkill your filter it will be less cleaning!):grinyes:
