I never used filter bags before. I was going to use a sponge in mt wet-dry but I might try out the filter bags and see how they work. The tank is 240 gal...around 2000gph going through the sump...two 1.5" drains that will need a bag each. This will be the pre-filter because in the overflows there will be a durso type standpipe so no pre-filtering there. I will also have a large canister with some filter pads and carbon in it.

So with that said what size do I need? I see some that are 4"x 14" and some that are 7"x16" both 100 micron. The sump is a 75gal (48"x18"x21"tall) that I am building.

And how do you attach the bag to the PVC pipe? When the bag clogs does it slow the draining of the overflow chamber in the tank or does it just overflow the bag in the sump?

I use the 7" models at 100 microns.

To atttach them, I prefer NOT to attache them directly to the drain pipes so the pipe won't back up an slow the flow if the bags get clogged. I use either custom made acrylic hangers (like those availalbe from Marine Depot and other places) or simple PVC frames hanging on the frame of the sump (basically, just use some small diameter PVC to fashion two struts and two rungs....... think of a capital "H" where the "H" has two cross bars...... the bag fits inside the cross bars).

I made pvc frames to hold mine. I never let them get clogged, but if they did, they would just overflow right into the sump.

Buy a few of them and switch them out often, then depending on how dirty they are, wash them with a hose and then in the washing machine with bleach. Let them dry throughly. The more solid crap you get out of the tank before it breaks down, the fewer water changes you have to do. You still have to do water changes though :)
