im just curious, does any one know how long you can safely store bio-media (ceramic noodles) in still tank water to be later re-used in a new filter for seeding?

I'm guessing it will last 24 hours no problem, but then realistically how long could i store it before all the BB will all die off and become un-useable?

The reason im asking is i'm going to setup a new planted tank by removing my paludarium, but since it will take me time to organize and setup, im just thinking it its worth trying to save the bio media, or it will all die off long before the new setup is ready to rock...

I would say as long as you feed your BB, you should be good... some people feed it 100% ammonia, but then again, you should ask someone who has first hand experience...Im pretty sure there's a few out there....Im kinda curious myself now that you mentioned it... so BUMP expertise help...

Depends...if you keep it with the fish placeholder in media bag, almost infinitely; if you keep it in a bucket of tank water, bacteria may be reduced, but still safe for a very very long time. If you keep it sealed in a canister, time is shortened very much...the best way then is if you open it up and it smells of rotten eggs, time to rinse off and start again...

+1/ I had it in my tank for a week when I had no power and it all survived. As long as it has a food source it will live forever.

Thanks for the reply guys, i guess most important thing is to make sure its not in an air tight cannister and that it has some form of food source then...

So with that said, would something like a bubbler be nessecary or keeping it in still water from the tank should be okay for say a week or so?

My canister was off for 2 days, bb lived and no ammonia or nitrite, so I would say Atleast a day, just throw it in a 5 gal and put a bubbler in the bucket and throw in some fish flake. It'll be fine for a few days.

+1 no time limit if there is air and food. I would drop a pwerhead in. Also, if you go the ammonia route, make sure there is nothing else in it. I bought some to use to cycle a tank and it included "surficant" code word for soap.

Not if u plan on changing the water frequently! Bb is a live organism and requires oxygen and food. Like rodger said a ph works too, but at the minimum you need a bubbler! And I wouldn't use tank water, just use fresh dechlor tap.
