I have been talking to someone who worked at the shedd aquarium in Chicago for over 20 years. He said that every time an oscar there got HITH they would remove all the filter carbon. He said they found that the fine carbon dust caused the disease. What do you guys think about this? The oscar I just picked up has it pretty bad and I am not going to be adding any carbon to my filters from now on.

Removing it may help with recovery, but I doubt very much that carbon is the cause!

Explain how fish get HITH that never have been in contact with carbon to begin with!

It is just one of the many theories. I am actually contemplating doing an experiment to find out just what is the real cause of it. However, I would have to sacrifice a few fish for it, and I would feel bad. The flip side is that it would likely help hundreds of others to avoid this disease.

i dont know if its true or not, but my oscar has never had been exposed to carbon and is perfect, but i do have a bp that has been exposed to carbon and has slight hith. think it boils down to water quality.
