Hi everyone. This is my first post. I need help picking out a good filter.
I have a 29 gallon setup that will hopefully be converted to a 46 gallon bowfront within a year or so. I reset this tank up about 6 months ago. The current filter is a Pinguin 200b. As my fish are growing it seems this filter is becoming inadequate. I have a clear bubbly film on the top of the water that I can't get read of. For the last week I have tried dropping the water level to allow the filter to produce a waterfall effect to increase circulation but its not helping with the film at all. I am also only feeding them 1 time per day now and making sure not too much is given. So I think it is time for an upgrade Ammonia and nitrite are undetectable. Nitrate is under 20. I have not added any new fish for about 6 weeks. I do 20% water changes weekly.

As far as bioload:
1 Kribensis
1 German Blue Ram (the other stopped eating and died recently :( )
7 X-ray Tetras
4 Otocinclis
1 Synadontis Jaguar Catfish

I have also added a large Ecobio Rock to help with biological filtration.

I would prefer to keep the purchase under $100 although would consider higher. The filter needs to be able to do a great job in the 46 gallon and not be too much for the 29 gallon. I am not looking to strongly over filter but do want to have excellent water quality. Also I don't want to add to the current filter I want to replace it. I have never had a canister filter before but you guys have said great things about them.

The filters I am considering:

Aquaclear 110- seems to have a lot of room for media and I like that the flow is adjustable.

Marineland C-220- this filter looks great but should I be concerned about it not having a spray bar? I like the idea of being able to hide the canister in the stand. How is the longevity of this filter?

Eheim classic- I have read that these are very good but don't have baskets. Also I'm concerned the 2213 won't be enough and the 2215 is kind of pricey. Would the 2213 be enough for the 46 gallon. I think the manufacture says up to 60 gallons or so but doesn't sound like enough flow for that.

Cascade 700 or 1000- I hear these are not bad as well.

What do you guys think?

The c-220 is a really good filter... it holds a ton of media for the price and should be more than enough for you. There were some leak issues early on but marineland has fixed this issue and their customer service is top notch. I've had the c-360 for almost 3 years now and no issues. The eheim classics are great filters too. Don't worry about the lack of media baskets... just get some media bags and keep the media in them... makes them very easy to service this way. I would probably go with the 2215 though.

Cascades are a budget filter but work well if you know about the bypass issues and work on it. You will need to cut strips of filter pad material and wrap it around the top and bottom baskets to help fix this problem. They do have a lot of bang for the buck and seem pretty durable. Ive had mine now for about 2 years with out any issues.

Thank you for the quick responses now I just need to decide whether to go with the c-220 or the AC 110. Hmmmm canister vs HOB

My only concern is cost with the Ehiem. If posible i would like to keep it under $100. The best price I can find is around $110 for the 2215, where I found the c-220 for $93 (after 10 mail in rebate) at bigalsonline. Seems to be a great deal.

The c-220 is going to be the better bang for the buck. Those things hold a ton of media, the lack of a spraybar is not an issue. In my opinion for just 20 or 30 bucks more than an ac 110, the c-220 would be the way to go.
