Hey everybody, here is a design for a filter that im going to make. Its going to be made of glass and is going to be 130cms long by 20cms high and 20cm wide so each chamber is actually pretty big. It will work as a sump except that it is going on top of the aquarium with a powerhead pumping the water in to the filter and a spray bar returning it to the aquarium. Here is a diagram i drew, i know its sh##ty becausd i used paint, i know!:ROFL:i suck using computers! well here it is and any suggestions or ideas would be really grateful. mainly want to ask, will it work?

thanks and i dont know what to call perlon in english... its that white spongy thing lol

Looks okay to me...couple of questions...

1. Where above the tank will it be? I.e. will it be visible or hidden within a hood? I ask because I know all my setups like this (under the tank) get pretty gunky looking and would detract from your main tank.

2. Will your pump be IN your display tank, pushing water up to this filter, or are you thinking of having some external pump?

the filter will not be visible because its going to be hidden by the hood. the pump will be in the tank pumping water into the filter. thanks for the quick reply

Okay cool, it's not very common to see setups like this - at least in the U.S. But I have seen them in Korea, and they do them very decoratively and actually make it part of the whole display...I'll see if I can't find some pics...

thanks for the reply! yeah even though fishkeeping isnt that popular here there are a lot of people who opt for this kind of filtration (sump above fishtank) dont really know why. but thanks again

Very popular filtration system in Asia.
A few have made their own in the US, shared them, and kicked up a great deal of interest.
Hmmmmm.....
About 8 in tall X 8 in wide X 51 in long(did I get that right?)
If I did get the conversion right, that would give you a total of around 14 gal, or just under 2 cubic feet, of available media space.
Not small, but not that big either, for the amount of effort this build will take.
Bit of an odd size choice?
What size tank is this going on?
Why did you pick glass for your material?
How many GPH were you thinking of?
Will be watching.
Good luck.

jimboperu: Shorter distance from the filtration system to the aquarium, thus less stress on the pump returning water to the aquarium, also being up top, maintenance is accessably easier. No crawling under the tank stand! This is a big reason why they are used.

jimboperu:

Perlon was invented in Germany back in 1932. It is a product similar to our American Nylon products. So "that white spongy thing", may be a white Nylon fiberous mat about 1/2" to 3/4 " thick you are referring to, used for mechanical filtration?

As for suggestions, questions and etc. I have a few.

1] Where is your pump going to be located?

2] Once the construction of this is completed, what will the entire filtration system weigh when it is empty of water, and when it will have water in it?

3] Is this filtration system going to be resting directly on the top of your tank? If so, will the aquarium be able to maintain the added empty or full weight of the filtration system on the aquarium walls?

4] Have you thought or considered placing the filtration above and behind your tank on a sturdy shelf, keeping unwanted pressure off of your tank walls?

5] Have you considered using your empty space for charcoal in a net bag, which has a drawstring on it so you can change the charcoal periodically when needed?

6] I have another idea with your design. Instead of having one small chamber for BIO MEDIA, use the EMPTY SPACE for BIO MEDIA as well -or- make both spaces into one space and have one giant space for BIO MEDIA.

7] Your HEATER SPACE. Why is it in the middle? Do you think it would work better if you switched places with the BIO MEDIA and EMPTY SPACE chambers with the HEATER SPACE? So to make it easier to understand the sequence would go, PERLON, SPONGE, GIANT BIO MEDIA SPACE and then your HEATER SPACE. I'm not trying to critsize your design, just curious.

8] Is it possible to make your box and baffel plates out of plexiglass instead of regular glass? Just thinking of the extra added weight issue on top of the tank regarding questions #2, #3, and #4.

Just one other thought.
With this being so close to your lights, there is the possibility of your filter becoming an algae factory.
I guess shrouding/paint could solve that issue.

aloso as for the drain looking like it is at the bottom. when power goes out you going to have a flood? maybe have outflow higher in sump?
