Are there any filter feeders that can be in the same tank as african cichlids? I would like it to be a fish but am open to other options.

What do you have in mind? Afrowanas should work, they can be trained to take pellets once they're 8" or so.

When I feed them they won't eat the smaller food and there is a lot of fine food floating around. The filter will pick it up but I thought I could put something in to help the filter out.

If you want a filter feeder get one and take care of it right. If you try to do what you're planing to do, you'll just starve the poor thing to death.

The answer to your problem is to either feed less or upgrade your filtration.

I already have food to feed it that filter feeders like. I thought the cichlids would eat it but it brakes up really small. And I have a fluval C4 on this tank. Thanks for your help have a merry Christmas.

Get an overflow hooked up to a DIY wet/dry filter.............

If i went that way i wouldn't really need a standard filter. Thank you for the impute but i don't see spending the money for a tank filter media and pumps and an over flow box for a 30gallon tank.
