Here&There
I'm getting a new Fluval 404 and am wondering if filling 2 of the 3 baskets with filter floss and nothing else is a good idea. I'm thinkng of doing this because mechanical and biological filtration are my top priorities and giving the floss a dunk in tank water once a month (or replacing it) is easier and cheaper than cleaning out other media. I already have two Emperor 400s on the tank, so it wouldn't be the only filter. Will I be seriously reducing deminishing my filter's abilities?

I've got a DIY drum filter on one of my tanks that's essentially a 7gal canister and it uses ~3gal of filter floss as a final polish stage, (second stage is torn up scouring pads, first is polyester mat pre-filter) works great.

If you use a sponge filter on the intake it will act as a pre-filter for it greatly reducing the mantainence you'll have to do on the canister.

I'm with you on the sponge pre-filters... I put them on my HOB and Canister intakes and it significantly cuts down on maintance. It was one of the most useful tips I ever came across...:)
