hey guys and gals, I want to set up my 40 gal tall to be a brackish archer fish setup, I want to fill it only 2/3 of the way full.. what do you think would be the best internal filter to use for this setup? I've been looking at the fluval plus 4 and the eheim 2212 aquaball... let me know which you think is better or which you've been the most successful with, thanks!

A 40 gallon tall half filled with water is not going to be big enough for an adult archer because they get over 8 inches long. In my opinion, neither of those filters are going to be able to handle the fish in the tank. If you are really intrested in brackish, I would suggest puffers intead of the archers. If you have your heart set on an archer, I would start with a bigger tank or be ready to upgrade soon.

I am aware that it is not big enough, it's not a tank for life, and archers do not grow fast. all I am asking is which one of these filters is better for approx 25-30 gal of water.

Are you considering purchasing these filters or do you have them already, if you don't have them already, I would buy an ecco instead. Just my $.02:D

Hi,

If it's going to be a single archer in the tank, the fluval 4 plus may be to much filter (can't believe I just said that) current wise. If there are going to be more fish in there then go with it. The eheim is a little underpowered for this setup. I take it your trying for a in tank filter only?

Good Luck,

Dr Joe

Yes, in-tank filter... and I had a feeling the plus 4 would be too much current... it is 267 gph and I think that is too much for approx 25-30 gal of water.

Another thing that I am worried about is biological filtration. The fluval in-tank filters don't offer too much as far as biologic goes.

you guys have any other ideas?

Get a sponge filter and a small powerhead.

BTW, my archer loves his 30x turnover rate in my brackish tank :)

Thinking of doing a wet/dry out of a 5 gal bucket or something, might be a little better.. I'm going to look up some plans in the next few days

Will definetely give me a project for a couple weeks ::D
