Something's wrong If your canister can clog to the point of not operation. I used to clean my cans every.3months and never had that happen. One member cleans his eheims once a yr

Yeah I had one of the downsides of canister filters happen today. I showed up at the fish room about 4 pm only to find no flow through my 2 magnum 350s. Well I have no idea how long they weren't running so I had to clean them out and change the mechanical media and when I turned it back on I tested the water and had to do a fin level water change. Luckily I have a sponge in there so the cycle will recover quickly

Lucky that you caught it quickly. I'd worry about something like this happening when I'm away from home.

the 1st canister in the daisy chain is filled with nothing but polyfil and I knew it was time to change it but the last 2 weeks I've been sick and have sprained both ankles so the maintenance on all the tanks hasn't been what I usually do. I was actually planning on replacing the polyfil yesterday already

I hate removing the HMF (or any sponge filter) to rinse it. A lot of the crud comes off while removing it from the tank, and then you have to spend extra time to vacuum the bottom of the tank. Even with a water pump, the HMF filter was much noiser than an a canister filter. The buzz of the water pump in the tank bothered me.
