Filter for a 2,250gallon tank?

Ultimas/DEs/etc will be perfect for mechanical filtration, and I mean perfect. But then you need to look into bio filtration. On a tank that size, you will probably want a sump just to make things more flexible. Then you can attach input/output from the ultima/de/whatever in the sump and get nice polished water without worrying about in-tank obtrusions/drilling all over the tank. In the sump, I would personally do submerged biomedia, but that's just because I hate noise and, no matter what anyone will tell you, wet/drys sound a little waterfall-y/trickle-y. For a tank that size, 200-300 gallons of sump should give you room for media and equipment (heaters/heat exchangers/pumps/mechanical/bio/sponges/whatevs).

The Hayward DE filters are alot cheaper. How long have you been using them and what size or GPH are you running. I would like to to run about 10K GPH on this but Im thinking 6-7K GPH might work as well.

I have a link to the thread I made when I setup my Hayward in my signature. I have been using mine for about 9 months now and I am still on the first charge of DE. I ran it on my 110 for about 6 months (and loved it) then had to move to a 35 hex when my 110g sprang a leak.

They also make a EC75 which has double the filter area but still at a pretty decent price.

I use my EC40 strictly as a mechanical filter and run it inline with my sump.
