Filter for salt tank

I was thinking of buying a ac 110 and adding live rock in it. Should I fill up the filter or keep the foam insert &just add live rock?

It would depend on how much LR you have in your tank right now. If you are low i would put LR in it. If you have enough LR you can put filter pad in it. It also depends on what kind of filtration you want. Biological or mechanical. Really wont make a difference what you put in it

If you are going to use it like that, couldn't you just use any big HOB filter? Sorry if I'm wrong...

You can just ac110 is what I was thinking of using for the space it offers.
