hey guys i just set up a 20g long tank for a future growout tank for a rhom
i got some sand from a lfs and it wasnt being cared for good due to new membership
theyrefore
theyre was dog food, cricket crap, cricket food, and even a few feeder fish dried up in the sand
not nowing i dumped it in the tank
thinking it was clean
and my filter dosent have a pad
so its just sorta giving it a current
what can i use instead of a filter pad because i want to get everything out before it settles??
a spounge or something???//
HELPP!!

Poly-fil or fine open cell foam, but your going to have to be very cautious that sand doesn't get in the impeller.

Better to turn the pump off, let it settle and clean out the floating garbage and syphon everything out and clean it properly and I would still have concerns about the water.

hmm
this fish net seems even simpler
i will give it a try
how would i tie it to the filter though?

ha ha sorry but that made my night

Just shut off the filter and use the fish net to filter/scoop out the crap manually. You dont want sand in your filter or it wont last long and you going to have to stirr it up to get the crap out.

Not to mention I doubt dog food will make it through your impeller or prefilter slots

you might want to remove the sand to wash it properly and even boil it because it may be toxic to fish.

but a mosh net wouldnt be a bad idea
how about some kinda spounge?

I dont know why your trying to avoid every possibly way of manually cleaning it? This could have been clean 30min after your first post.

im not talking about mannually cleaning
im talking about making your own filter pads
ive cleaned all the crap out
i just dont have any filter pads and thought it would be good to find a substitiue

just pull the carbon out of your original when it gets bad and then add some bio behind in and wash it out with your water changes.
