You can choose to put ceramic rings in a side (I assume you mean hang-on-back) filter if you want to. You can put them in a media bag for ease of cleaning, removing, etc.
Some folks designate each filter to a different purpose.
put the rings and other low restriction media in the canister,would rarely need cleaning.
Put disposable fine pads in the hob filters and clean them often.
