LOL... Don't ask MFK'ers. They will all say Aquaclears! They won't even try anything else! I like the Aquaclear that I bought but love my Fluval C4's (both made by Hagen). IMO/IME Fluval C series filters are quiet, efficient, designed very well, and only cost a litte bit more then a comparable Aquaclear.
To clean I just rinse out the sponge in the back every now and then. I do it whenever I feel like it or when the cleaning tab/reminder pops up - never popped up on me yet as I like to rinse the sponge out at least once a month. Unlike the Aquaclear the sponge won't float up and make the filter lose efficiency substantially (bypass issue) and cause a flood as some people have reported... The mechanical filtration (sponge) is very efficeint and comes out without having to take any other part out. Just pull it out, rinse, shove it back in and your done. Every part of the filter is designed with ease of maintenance in mind. If you use chemical filtration just lift up the box that contains the wet/dry media and pull the basket out by its handle(I filled the chemical compartment with more biomedia). You don't even have to get your hands wet to take any part of the media out.
The motor is the same as the Aquaclears and the housing is very similar in that it is the same plastic, but the filter itself looks much sleeker. The integrated wet/dry is where this design sets it apart from other HOB filters... Check out the videos on youtube by AquariumTech for more info on the Fluval C series. I recommend watching the REAL / FULL Hagen Fluval C Series Filter Review by AquariumTech (just type in Fluval C Series and look for it...its right there). For all the MFK Aquaclear fanboys i'm not saying Aquaclears are junk as they are really good filters. I just prefer the Fluval C series filters unless I need an HOB for a large tank. Anything over 40 gallons and I would get a Aquaclear 110. If they made a Fluval C series to match the power of the Aquaclear 110, my Aquaclear would become my emergency filter. That said Hagen makes some of the best HOB filters available today.
