I just broke my two aqueon 55/75 filters. While removing the intake/impeller section I broke some plastic now they no longer seal properly. Looking for suggestions for filtration on my 55 with two carpintis and 6 small silver dollars. Should I replace with the same, different brand? I want to spend about 100 dollars. I prefer hob for right now.

I have had a Penguin Emperor 400 forever that has been an excellent solid HOB filter. AquaClear HOB filters have an excellent reputation on this forum. I think either of these would be a big step up from your aqueon filter. I have never used a AquaClear but would give one a try based on their reputation on this forum if I ever got another HOB. (I prefer wet/dry sumps).

actually Ithink the aqueons are real nice filters ,but if he's breaking them... he should try something else maybe... so ac70 or emporor are both good options ...or even a big sponge filter on an ac 70 powerhead....

They were used when I got my tank and the plastic was brittle and cracked. It's because I didn't pull them out of the tank being impatient. They worked wonderfully but I may try the aquaclears.

As a general principal 2 filters are usually better than one. With 2 you can alternate cleanings to minimize disturbances to the beneficial bacteria colony. And if one fails you still have the other one so you aren't completely without filtration.

Ordered two AC 70's they will be here Monday. What should I use in place of the carbon as I don't use carbon. I'm going to use sponge from my other filters for bacteria transfer for now but once it is seeded what should I use after?

extra sponge works well for me in the ac70's:)
