I need to upgrade my filtration on my 220. My guys are growing and the Rena xp3 and xp4 arent going to be good enough soon. I have a cellar? underneath my house. Basically a 6 foot earth floor unfinished basement, brick walls. I got this idea from the man i bought my tank from, he had a HUGE filter setup by going through his floor to his basement. I will be going through a now unused air vent in the floor under my tank. I want to finally use my overflow to go to another tank, likely a tub, in the cellar on a stand that will be a huge filter. The problem i have is I think I will have drastic heat loss going into the cellar. Will the thick walls of the tub save me? And wrapping the hose in pipe insulation? My biggest concern will be the winter. I think although it will be hideous I will just go insulation crazy. Anyone see any problems with my proposed setup? He is a crap sketch to visualize.

You can just barely see a white and blue line on top of the bio, it was filter pad foam. Im trying to find a tub with a snug lid to help but havent found anything yet.

im assuming hes heaters in the sump, but still go insulations crazy just make sure you make the front panel easily removeable its pain when u wanna see whats wrong with your sump. use some silicon or somthing to seal your intakes and outtakes on your sump. thatll help too

Based on your description I am assuming that your cellar is prett much a large crawl space. No floor, no heat, nothing. If I were going to put a filter down there I would build an insullated box out of 2x6s (more room for insullation) for the filter to sit in so it will retain its heat in the winter.

I would be concerned about the size of the return pump. That looks to be aproaching 8' of head...is that 18 gonna be enough? The rest of your idea looks good to me, that is one big filter!
