hi im thinking onf making a filter and i wnt to know what you aoll think of it bascally im want to take 2x 5 gallon buckets and hae the water from the tank being pumped into one bucket and being filtered then from that bucket through a PVC pipe into the other bucket filtered again then pumped back into the tank please let me know what you all think thanks

the theory is good but the execution of having 2 x 5 gal buckets increases the odds of having a spill. what you are trying to make is basically the same as making a 10 gallon sump for the tank. the sump would have less chance of leaking though. how big is the tank you are trying to filter?

im going to be using a 32gallon bucket from Walmart i got for 7 bucks!

Its for clothes but ill have to chalk in Partitions and all but thats not hard to do. I was gonna go with a 45 gallon bucket but i cant be sure that it will fit underneath my 225 and operate easily and it was 18 bucks... I thought for the price drop jsut use the 32 gallon. I plan on cutting a hole in the lid for the pump discharge and a larger hole for the lightbar for the plants i want to grow in it... the lid should also help keep down evap. We will see though if it actually can aid in the evap due to condinsation. Its all what the lid is shaped like to see which way the water will drip.
DIY sumps are fun i think! Just finding a 500+Gl/Hr pump for under 40 bucks is rough due to im doing it on a budget and keep losing EBAYs by 1 dollar...

its my 55 gallon turtle tank i want to make this for i would get a sump tank but honestly i dont know how they work lol

Well ive done alot of research online for pictures and Diagrams and well come up short on some things... I will have this "clothing bucket" to start with. Will cut PVC plates to slide in as close to teh wall as possible to have the tightest fit. Ill do this for teh first partition (wall) and it will go all the way to the bottom of said bucket. Secoundly u want to force water flow through "media" such as Bio balls or sothing close to it. This wall will not go to the bottom of the sump so the water can flow through and under it and not just pool on top and will not create a life. Thrid partition will again go to the bottom and will house Plants. This will increase the life and Oxygen of the Tank u are filering. I hope to have plants carry over to my 220 and grow on the rocks and gravel and whatever else i find to install. the last partition will house the PUMP that will discharge this overflowing water back to the main tank after said Filteration.

So quickly go over this again. First Partition will spillover to 2nd, 2nd partition will flow underneathe to the third will spillover to the plants and plants partition will spillover to the discharge pump. Now make sure to instal a Check valve on the discharge of the pump incase u lose power and the pump turns off the sump will not over flow. Or u can simply create a siphon break in the discharge line inside the tank but above the water line AKA keep the discharge sprayer above waterline, Same goes for the Spillover side to the sump. Keep that close to the top of the waterline so u do not force the to much water to the the sump to fast and over run the pump. I will be sizing my Pump so that i can throttle it back and get a good even flow between the water coming in and going out. U do not want to run a Submersible pump Dry as it will burn up and they are not cheap.

i just had another idea its may seem a litle stupid im not sure though it kind of just popped into my head like "hey this might work" while i was reading this http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/fo...d.php?t=145370 what would happen if i took a wet dry vaccume and used it any thoughts ?
