You dont give much info. So my only advice would be to unplug the filter.

-What kind of filter/s are you running
-how far is the intake from the sand bed
-Do you have a prefilter sponge
-What fish are in the tank
-Have you checked the impeller and motor housing for wear from the sand
Need more info basically...

I thinks it's either very little pieces of sand and/or your magnetic impeller is chipped up from the sand making the impeller wobble and make noise. But, that's only what I would do with a HOB filter but you never said what kind of filter you have.

Let me guess........ FX5/6?

If you are running an aqua clear it could be the metal shaft in the motor is missing. Your filter will still work but will be quite noisy. In this case it is almost cheaper to buy a new filter and as mentioned raise your intake.

The ac filters hate sand tank and kill the the shafts, you can use a metal coat hanger works good as a replacement when cut to size or if its not to bad you can use petroleum jelly packed on the shaft and motor, petroleum jelly is safe I've been using it for years in my fliters.

Mr. demsey beat me to it. I've been using the metal from an ARC WELDING rod to repair the shafts in my fish pond pumps that run with some abrasive particles. Eventually the impeller will rub the hole oval shaped and you'll have to throw out the whole unit. With the canister running, if you have enough hose, try lifting it up and holding it upside down for a moment and see if there is any trapped air inside as that would also be noisy.
