I was offered 3 tinfoil barbs today and I have to get them this week if I want them which I do. The problem is I don't have a tank set up for them right now but i do have an empty 55. so how long would it take for me to get a filter established well enough with nitrifying bacteria if I let it run in one of my mature aquariums? because the tank i would let it run in has been going for 5 years now so it is ok. And then how long would I have to let the filter run in the new aquarium before I could actually put the barbs in there? Any helps is appreciated. Thanks in advance logo.

Without an increase in the fish load of the old aquarium the BB will be VERY slow to establish in the new media. Either split your existing bio-media between the two tanks or pick up some Biospira to help jump start the cycle in the Double nickle... What size are the tinfoils? Three of them shouldn't tax the capacity of the tank while it cycles as long you keep an eye on the test readings.

They are probably about 4-5 inches each. and i can probably take out one of the filter cartridges from my other tank.....Anythiny for more fish. And thanks for all of the help.

keep in mind that if you do get them, and they are already 4-5 inches each, you will only be able to keep them in the 55 for another few months at best.

they will all grow an inch per month if you feed them right, which doesn't give you a lot of time before they are really big for a 55 gallon.

just a heads up :)

I know this would be very temporary housing. I just ordered my 210 last week I hope to have it up and running soon. But thanks for the concern because that is the reason im getting them. the owner got rid of them b/c he had them in a 20....idiot
