Ceramic is most porous so I would go with that. It would have the most area for beneficial bacteria. At least this is my understanding.

Biological media is simply a substrate for beneficial bacteria to live on, after a short time biofilm builds up on anything, ceramics, scrubbing pads, old toothbrushes, lava rock, sand, gravel and plant roots. In reality it's all the same.
