I have been reading and, many times for the plant fertilization or fish medication it calls to take out the carbon in the filter why is this?

What should I replace it with. Would it hurt to change all my filters all at once or do it seperately?

Thanks, Im a noob with filteration just put enough to keep the bioload in the right place.

Bioload is the amount of fish and food in the tank, which is what the bacteria have to balance. Those bacteria are what is in the filter.

I would add more biomedia, I recommend Seachem Matrix.

Carbon will absorb all kinds of stuff... including plant fertilizer and medications. Running it regularly is not necessary. Many people have reported good things about Purigen for chemical filtration, but I have not used it personally.

To keep a healthy tank, you really just need mechanical and bio filtration. You could remove all your carbon at once, some bacteria will have colonized on it, but not very much.

What kind of filter(s) are you running for what size tank(s)?

And as far as what brand of bio media... take your pick. Opinions on bio media are like A-holes, everybody has one.

Don't forget that a lack fo water changes can undo the water quality in the largest and best filtered tank.

Agreed. I do 50% weekly on my largest and best filtered tank. :grinno:
