Hello all.

I have a fluval 306 setup in my JD tank which is a 52gallon fluval roma 240. I have read online that carbon has a life span of around 4 to 6 weeks so mine is overdue. Water tests are reading 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and usually 5 or lower nitrate so as far as im aware no problems there.

I had seen a product online called purigen and one called filter floss and was wondering if its worthwhile putting either of these inside the filter instead of whats in it? At the minute it has a sponge basket, bioball basket and a carbon basket.

Can anyone give me any advice?

Cheers!

Ditch the carbon and put some more ceramic bio rings in. The carbon is really not necessary. Extra bio is a better use of the space.

I was planning on adding more to the bio ring tray anyway but should I fill what would have been the carbon tray too? That would give me 1 sponge and 2 bio trays

Only purpose of carbon is to remove smell from the water which just masks issues. The other purpose is to remove medicine. I only ever use it in those instances.

Tried purged but did not feel it did much. Helps to polish water but it should not be used as an excuse to skip water changes.

I do about 40% water change every 3 days at the minute to try encourage my JDs to grow and im trying to get rid of tannins mainly. Ill have a change around and put the bio stuff in both
