Ok so I have a 150 gallon tank that I bought. For filtration I am using 2 aquaclear 500's(110's) and a penn plax cascade 1200. One of the aquaclears is set up as a biological filter with bioballs on the bottom and with I think carbon(not sure what it is, will check tommorow) on the top. The other aquaclear is setup as a mechanical filter with a sponge on the bottom and the same possibly carbon stuff on top. I than have a penn plax cascade 1200 canister(4 levels/trays) which for media has 3 white sponges and 1 black bag that has all small black balls in it. My question is what goes on what level and is this all good media or do I need more/different media? Also for the canister filter what is the best way to put the water back in the tank? I have a spray bar and another attachement to choose from. This is all for a 150 gallon heavely stocked tank.
I have an eheim 300 watt heater for this tank, is this enough heat or should I add another heater?
Thanks in advance

Carbon u dont need, As far as the cascade, I have a xp3 on my 180 with 2 A/C 110

in the xp3 I have the black foam on bottom the bio-max in the middle and blue bonded pad on top with filter floss.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure if that stuff is carbon I haven't had a chance to clean it good yet, but if it is carbon I will replace it will something else. What would you reccommend replacing it with? Also I noticed you are in R.I, I also am in rhode island.

I would run the sponges in both ac110's.And then load em up with 2 bags of biomax each with a bit of floss between .your ac110's are easier to clean than the canister.
As far as the canister, get rid of the sponges and fill it with pot scrubbers. You will keep better flow rate ,and just rinse the filter trays every 2-3 months.ac 110's=mechanical and bio filtration. canister=bio filtration
Just my opinion-hope it helps

yours is similar to mine. i have two 350 biowheels and a cascade 1500. i use the biowheels for bio filtration and the 1500 for mechanical

I would use the two AC110 for mechanical and rinse the sponges weekly, also throw a bag of biomax in each. Set up your canister for strictly bio filtration.

BTW bio ball are not very good bio media when they are completely submerged in water.

:iagree:

Okay thanks everytbody, I will get new sponges for the aquaclears and put filter floss on top of it and then bio max. Should I put some bioballs on top of the biomax half in water and half out? And what are pot scrubbers? Thanks for all of the help everyone.
