Filter media?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not know this filter media. As long as non-toxic, cannot be bad, but is it the best? I don't think so.

Some concerns:
i) Can already see in photo, some arms are bent. So, this is fault in design, causing structural weakness. This is why in other media eg, K1, you have ring around arms to increase shape rigidity. Why need rigidity strength? Because in moving bed application, or even worse, in pressurized filter, these arms very likely break off! Now, little plastic bits all over everywhere, even break pump impeller, GGGRRR!!!

So, no problem, we say. We not use in moving bed application, nor in pressurized filter application. We only use as static media, eg, in trickle tower or in submerged static filter application. Now, 2nd problem arises:
ii) Very irregular, uneven packing / mesh pattern when lumped together. Some pieces will pack right up against each other, with arms all along each other, sticky hold hands together, extending to three dimensions. Other pieces will hold arms up to keep adjacent pieces away. So, uneven packing / mesh pattern means water will quickly channel through the big holes and so a lot of the filter space may actually be wasted.

But, with all things, consider cost-benefit ratio. Maybe not always need best (which also is often most expensive). If this media is cheap and non-toxic, and you have plenty, plenty room, then why not?

Hope am helpful,
Kuji out.

I think Ive seen it in a pond pressure filter before, idk how well it performs though.
