Filter media?

In theory, one media type could be better than another if it has more surface area.
But whether you use bioballs, lava rock or old toothbrushes, they all do the same thing.
 
Yea the only difference in biomedia will be surface area but who of us can accually calculate that on either of them.

Some of the newer media made from scintered glass and/or ceramic are not included in this older list. Note how pot scrubbies beat out conventional bio-balls on surface area.

it all depends on contact surface and flow rate as well, for instance standard ceramic is great for standard filters, whereas k1 and some ceramic media is best for areated/ motion filters
