So i was just wondering, If i could use gravel as filter medium? I built my own wet/dry filter. In the first layer i have filter floss. In the second layer i have Ceramic Rings. My problem is, I cant afford to fill the second layer, which is quite big a lot of ceramic rings, so i was wondering if i could use gravel with ceramic rings for medium?

Do you mean as a biological media, or as mechanical?
Anything can become biological media, but the problem with gravel, is it can become saturated with gunk, and will need to be backwashed often, otherwise the gunk can compact and become a nitrate factory, actually becoming a bigger problem than you want.
If it is physically easy to get at, and vacuum regularly (backwash), it could work.

If you are looking for cheap media those plastic pot scrubbies are cheap and work great. I have never used gravel but as stated watch for trapped gunk.

pothos kapatid. They're plants that would eat nitrates, also do you know the the wool like media?? You could get a lot of those cheap, just search for some fabric stores, locally that is...
