i was thinking, i don't know if anyone has, or even if this will work, but what if you extended the outlet tube of a canister filter and put it near the bottom of the tank to kick up debris, would this not work, or would the fish dislike it, what are your thoughts.

I do this to all my filters, canisters and HOB's alike. You can also extend and customize the return of your canister. "hard lining" your filter plumbing gives you the ability to set it up exactly how you want it, and provides better stability with the more rigid PVC.

I already did the modifications to the intake tube to get them closer to the gravel. How would you change the outlet of an hob? with a canister it comes back out through a pipe so it makes sense, with an hob it just pors out the overflowing water.
also how do you recommend this be done, should the outlet water be propelled just above the gravel, just below the gravel, angled at the gravel so as not to disturb the fish, etc?

Just to clarify, the tube that expels the water back into the tank is the one i would like to modify. This way the flowing water should be powerful enough to kick up debris from the gravel so its more likely that it will make its way into the filter.

You can deflect the return of a HOB too, but there is really no need of you already did the intake.
I prefer to put the spraybar close to the bottom of the tank. This helps to keep the waste from settling on the bottom. But this takes away the surface agitation you need for aeration.
The easiest way is to just build a larger PVC spraybar and position it the same way you would the regular spraybar. Just under the surface pointing slightly up for surface agitation.

yea i meant the canister, I would like to put the spray bar on the bottom to keep the wast from settling as you stated. I have two hobs so I dont think I need to worry about surface agitation/aeration.
