I am going to use a powerfilter for extra filteration. I have a lot of filter pads to use right now. I am thinking about buying ceramic rings (biomax) because I think they would work better if I put a lot of them in the powerfilter. What do you think?

Do you need more bio-filtration or are you looking for mechanical? If your water parameters are already stable (no NH3 or NO2) then you really don't need any more bio media.... go with filter pads for mechanical filtration.

Burt :)

^ I agree. Two different types of media, with two different goals

Then ceramic hands down.

I have both in my power filter. First the cartridge then as many rings as I can fit.

JCardona hit it right on the head. Two diff. products. Biomax is specifically for what you need.

Was wondering, it is my understanding, that filter pads can have the benfitcial bacteria in it because it gets stuck in it and water goes through it. Am I correct?

Bacteria will attach to almost any surface. Problem is, filter pads are made to trap debris, which eventually clog and require cleaning. When cleaning filter pads, you usually use a high pressure blast from the water hose. The chlorine is what will kill your bacteria. That is why you use bio media, which doesn't clog and require frequent rinsing.
