sorry, this is a pretty noob question but i've never really bothered to find out, but if the output of my fluval 305 is submerged is it still aerating the water or just moving the water around?

the gaseous exchange takes place at the surface...

By disturbing the surface you are encouraging this gaseous exchange...

by circulating the water you are pulling the oxygen rich water from the surfae down into the tank and allowign the less oxygenated water to make it's way to the surface for replentishing...

so as long as the surface water is moving i should be ok without an airstone?

pretty much... yes...

You want to make sure the surface is moving to prevent a film from forming and preventing the gaseous exchange...

and you want circulation preventing dead spots within the tank and keepign the water generally mixed up...

but this can easily be acheived with a standard canister with no need for an air stone...

"so as long as the surface water is moving"

It assists with the gaseous exchange. Improves it...

"i should be ok without an airstone?'

No details...But you'll be OK but if your overstocked for you're set up... the fish won't be.

the filter is on a 30 gallon tank with the fish in my sig, all are small and some will be moved into my 180 when they're a bit bigger.

I'm no vet but...if the fish are listless or panting near the top you have trouble.

If they look healthy and are active...I assume they are.

I just set up the filter, that's why I was asking.
