I am running 2 emperor 400's. Do I need to wrap the intakes with a pair of nylons or cloth or something to keep fry from getting sucked up into them? They are in a 55 gal. tank. Buying a new kind of filter is out of the question right now. I just need to know how to make the ones I have safe.

I haven't tried nylons, yet. But I usually cut filter foam to fit on the intakes. I have also used Micron bags with rubberbands to hold tehm over the intakes.

what kind of fry?

and no, i don't think so. the strainers of the 400's have really small spaces.

no. the parents should keep them away from the filter while they are small enough to get sucked in. by the time they are free-swimming and on their own, they will be strong enough to swim out of the current.
