Ok I got my 150 gallon home tonight and got it all set up. It came witha Rena xp4 canister filter. Well when I was messing with it to get it primed and running I snapped off the plastic piece that holds on one of the 4 locks now it leaks cause its not sealing properly. So I'm in the hunt for a new canister filter. On this tank I wold like to have only one filter and I'd like it to be a canister. I've been looking at the fluval fx5 and really like it but its rather pricy. Is there any other canister filters out there that can turn over as many gallons an hour like the fx5 or one that I would be able to run by itself on a 150 gallon that wouldnt cost as much. One think I didnt like about the rena when I was messing with it was how cheap it was made I mean come on little plastic piece that hold the locks on are you kidding me.
Also I got the tank on craigslist so theres no taking the filter I broke back!

A lot of canisters use plastic clips to lock it into place. A fx5 is like 180.00 on EBay, you will find our self hard press to find a canister for less then that. You might find some used ones or some hong kong filters for that much though.

Its not the plastic clips I was talking about it is the plastic piece that the clips connect to the side of the canister itself. I haven't seen any fx5s on ebay for 180 only ones I saw were around 300

I see 4 or 5 of them right now for 170 - 200, one has 11 ours left with 0 bids. If you go by the buy it now price you will likely pay over 300.

Most canister that can do a tank your size on their own will bet at least 180.00. Turn over is not as important as some people make it seem. Ask any person who runs an ehiem they will tell you, as they have lower turn over and still work.

When it comes to turn over rate per dollar, a sump is the cheapest way IMHO.
