Filter question

I have just a regular Top fin 60 for a 55 gallon tank. I have been reading a couple of post and I was just wondering if I am supposed to clean my filter or just change the filter cartridges. I have taken the whole thing apart and cleaned it is that wrong?

I always take every thing out of my hob filter and clean the filter and medium in tank water. The main thing is not to clean the filter or medium in chlorinated water so you do not kill th BB.

Ok thank! The more research I do on this hobby the more I realize I am doing everything wrong I really appreciate this website.
