This thread is intended to help people pick a filter out... If you have experience with a filter review it on a rating from 1-10... Please don't compare filters with other types of filtration. Like I would not compare a penguin bio wheel with an ehiem canister but You could comepare a penguin bio whell with a other HOB such as an aquclear... i will go first, i have a few...

Topfin filters
I have a topfin 30. It is a very basic and generic filter. generic and basic does not mean bad. It does it's job and I have had it over a year and I got it with a used tank and it has been used before me. It is avrage in quality and does it's job so i rate it a 6.5 out of 10.

Marineland penguin filters
I have sevrel of these. They are very good HOB filters. They have high flow rates. They also has a bio wheel wich I like beacaise in my opion biological filtration is the most important type of filtration. Nice desghn, looks nice and great price. I give penguin filters a 10 out of 10

Empoer filters
These filters are great. I personely have 1 empoer 400 and it works great. Nice large hang on back filters. attractive flow rate. pretty good quality and it looks pretty good. My only complaint is that every once in a while it can be hard to prime. I give empoer power filters a 10 out of 10.

Classic ehiem canisters
I could really not ask for more. Exelent quality, lots of media space, and very quiet. I rate it a 10 out of 10.

api/rena filstar xp
I am pretty shore this filter was rebranded to a other one of mars fishcare brands but both api and rena make them. Anyways this is a good filter. they are very quiet, powerful, have good media spacae, and are pretty durable. Only con is that I with the clips that seal and or close the filter at the top are plastic. Still a good canister filter and good bang for your buck. I rate these filters a 9 out of 10.

ok I'll bite....aquaclear 70 ... great filter,,, lots of media capacity , do tend to get a little noisy over time... but they ( like most decent hob's) last literally forever .......aquaclear 110 .... same as 70 only bigger and more flow........penguin 350 .... nice filter w/ biowheels nice for the price...... cascade 300 good filter ,, highly underrated ,Imo , the equal of the aquaclear 70.......aqueon 55/75 ... good hob for sand substrate (the only one ..IMO)

Whisper filters
Pros
Cheap, good flow, provide all types of filtration, quiet, and have lots of sizes
Cons
Need to buy lots of replacement filter cartriges
Whisper filters arent the top of the line crazy filters, but imo there is no better bang for your buck there really inexpensive. Great for if your ever in a pinch too. I give whisper 8 out of 10

AC50, AC70, AC110:

I swear by aquaclear HOB filters. It is the only HOB that I run now, and I have at least one of each of the above noted models running at this time. I have run marineland penguins, and when they die, the ac HOBs are still running every time. The sponge lasts forever, and I like that I can simply remove the carbon insert without having to cut on a cartridge or anything. I have literally never had one fail (My dad had an old one that he had been running for a ridiculously long time that had to be reprimed a couple of times.) AC's are a simple and effective line of HOB filtration, and as far as HOBs go I would say they are the best at 9/10.

The only reason I knocked off one point is because they are a little more expensive than other HOBs in my area.
I'll soon be able to review the Eheim 2217 :)

HOBS: I would only consider one brand, aqua clear. Everything else gets chewed up by sand, and doesn't come close to the media capacity, I have two ac 110s.

Canisters:

Marine land c-series-5/10. Mines still running and it's been probably 5 years but the flow is not the same it used to be. Noisy, traps air, least favorite canister I've experienced.

Fluval- 7/10 only have had the 206 and I've liked it. I do hate the crappy plastic tubing that cant be modified or adapted to other fittings. Good media capacity, easy to maintain, and quiet.

Eheim G-series: 10/10, if your lookin for a filter that will last, go here. Beast filters that maintain their flow and have the most media capacity. My favorite brand of canister and have had the same one running for 6 years and haven't had one problem.

Sponge - Hydro Sponge
HOB - AquaClear, Emperor
Canister - Eheim, Fluval, Rena XP

Wouldn't use other brands. You get what you pay for.

My aquaclear 110 is the only one that gets chewed by sand. my emperors are literally an inch away from a sand dune, but the motor is still running.
