Filter/s for 90 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are many many filters or combinations of filters that would be suitable for a 90 gal tank...

Beware of posters who are eager to throw answers at you without supplying logical reasons that support their answers...

Yes, if you want a majorly understocked tank, read nutcase's thread because he is the grand master expert of all filtration.

my bad misunderstanding.

I agree $100 isn't a very big fund to work with to get decent filtration... Which will limit the stocklist...

The AC 110 is a workhorse of a filter and the Media that comes stock with it can be rinsed and reused without incurring ongoing costs of replacement cartridges or even materials to rebuild cartridges...

If you shop around ebay you can usually find them shipped for around $60... I would encourage you to press your budget a little and get two. I run two of them on my 75 gal and am fairly happy with the result ("Bio Filtration" is fine, but solid waste isn't all collected).

Then in the future when you decide your sick of the waste collecting at the bottom you can add a powerhead which will help (I suggest the Koralia powerheads, the fanlike design makes them great for pushing solid waste toward filter intakes).

I know it's a bit off topic, but once your tank is rolling you will see how it ties in... what kind of substrate do yo uplan on using?

If you use gravel, be sure to 'vacuum' the gravel regularly (weekly is best). As in this 2' tall tank it is likely that waste will settle into the gravel and ropt rather quickly if not removed.

I use sand (Pool Filter Sand) in all of my tanks. The waste sits on top as opposed to falling in between, which can be unsightly, but is much easier for my filters to pick up and much easier for me to siphon out if the filters don't get it...

Thought he was being sarcastic having read it again I see what you mean. My bad

I agree w/ this answer.

I edited out my advice from earlier on accident (Leg surgery , pain meds = my bad)

I reccomend the ac110 and maybe a powerhead to help some more circulation if you can budget it. You could also try to get ahold of the receipt to price match an ac110 for like 50 bucks.

Here are multiple choices that can get the same filter to your door for $65, maybe less...

AC110 at a petstore here sells for $89.99

There are certain benefits to spending money at a locally owned store... So if you choose to give them the extra $25 I could respect that...

But spending an extra $25 at the corporate chain overcharges to support their massive overhead of corporate planners... is just feeding the monster...

Personally I do not think you'll be happy with a single AC 110 on the 90 gal tank unless you keep small non-Cichlid fish... if you get anything of size, you'll want two of them...

Although I highly prefer the Aqua Clear HOBs over the Emporer or Penguin HOBs, they are still decent filters that may be worth considering... and are a bit cheaper...
