i am thinking about getting a FW stingray and am looking for filtration setup, i am going to do a wet dry sump but would like to know if i would need a protein skimmer? i know they are typically for SW but would like to know if they are any good for FW stingrays....

my tank is a 150 acrylic reef ready tank its i believe 6X2X2 but dont 100% remember.... not near the tank at the moment to check....

also would doing a sump and a canister filter work?

i have been doing some research on them and know i have to have the tank 10000000000000% ready before even purchasing my ray

i currently have a FW 44gal with a good mix of community fish so i am not 100% new to aquariums just 100% new to rays

thankyou

protien skimmers are not effective in freshwater setups, so it would kind of be wasting money. Why dont you buy a large canister with a heater built in it so you do not have to worry about the ray being burned since their isnt a heater in the tank?. A eheim 2180 would be the perfect filter and you then wouldnt need the sump. plenty big enough and totally reliable and long lasting. Just my opinion anyway and thats how i would set up that tank. Good luck and keep us posted

a 6x2x2ft tank will be a bit small for a FW ray

if you want to remove all the heavy organics which basicaly a skimmer does you may aswell use polyfilter its a expencive filter pad you put in an internal filter which removes all the heavy organics

FW skimmers do work but you would need a very big unit the normal type for SW are way to small

polyfilter i use it all the time the stuff is great but expencive :D

thanx for the replys!!!! i didnt think the skimmer would work in FW but i wanted to check.... and i was thinkin of doing both the sump and canister to keep the water extra clear but using a bigger canister will work so thats what ill probabably do....

i do not wanna have an undersized tank for the ray, i got this tank for free so might upgrade later on to like a 200gal so if i got a "baby" ray how long would it be till i would need to upgrade? a year? maybe 2?

thanks

I think that depends greatly on what type of ray you plan to get.

I'm a new member and have the same size tank, 150g 5x2x2'. It has a corner overflow and I have a big wet/dry filter and a 40 gal sump underneath it. Is this enough filteration? Should I add a canister filter also? I'm planning for a few small rays.
