So I have 2x 100 micron and 2x 50 micron filter socks that I switch every few days on my sump. I'm finally on my last sock and am wondering what is the best way to clean them? A friend of mine told me to just put it in the washing machine and wash with detergent, but is this safe for my fish?

Don't use detergent! Just run them inside out and then flip em and run it again and good to go

The detergent thing is obviously stupid. I power wash mine with a garden hose.

For those of you who use the washing machine (without detergent) isn't there a chance that detergent will still be present in the machine from the previous washing cycles?

I know some guys do a cycle with no socks first to "rinse" anything out. And then put the socks in.

I've never had a problem just putting them in the washing machine with NO detergent.

There is a chance that some residual detergent is in there, but I've never had any foaming in my tank/sump after doing this, and I think I would have if I would have got detergent in there. The final rinse and spin cycle is enough to dry the socks almost completely, so I think almost all residual detergent would be out of the machine.

Washing machine, no detergent, little bit of bleach.

I always run them twice to be safe then air them out completely before reuse.

Washing machine. Been doing it for years.
