Filter socks

I see a lot of people on here use filter socks. I have a 150 gallon with 2 FX5's could I use filter socks with these? If so would I just put them on the FX5's or how does that work. I've never used them so have no idea how they work or how to use them. Also when you clean then do you just rinse them out in tank water or replace them?

Filter socks are typically used with sumps. I'm not sure exactly how you could use filter socks with your FX5s. You could probably use fine (50 micron) socks as a water polisher by having your returns go through the socks before returning to the tank.
