hey guys im setting up a 40 gallon sump for my 260 and want am going to have filter socks in the first section. My question is what micron size would you guys recommend i use? I will have 2 socks in there.

I just lit off my 20 Gal DIY sump for my 90. I went with felt filter socks from BRS. I think they are 200 micron. Not sure how they are going to work, but I'll follow your post and let you know. I too am interested in hearing the advice that comes...

Size depends on how often you want to clean the socks, how many spare socks you have, and how much load is going through them.

You don't want them clogged since it defeats the purpose. Some folks have many extras and are willing to swap them out quicker.

200 micron I think will clog pretty fast on a fully stocked tank, while 500-750 will take a lot longer. Me....I would want to change them every day, but not every few hours!

Here's a great thread on socks. I bet you can find what you want here.

I've currently use them and they're great! Very easy on maintenance. I use 100/50 micron sock inside a 10/5 micron sock. When they get dirty, swapp them out for a new set and toss them in the washer with bleach. Bought mine from Mcmasters-Carr. They have a huge selection on sizes, micron rating, and material.

I like 200 micron, I get a couple weeks minimum out of my two 7x16 socks.

Excellent. That would be my choice then. For some reason I thought those clogged really fast....it was probably the 50's!? I know some people in the thread were trying ones smaller than 100 micron.

ive ordered 3 100 micron socks. i plan on using 2 of them so would have 1 spare do you think it would be worth getting 3 200 micron ones aswell to put inside so that they take longer to clog?

I would have bought four 100 micron socks, so whenever you decide to change them out, you do it in sets. I change my set every time I do a water change. Try the 100s first and see how well they perform. If they clog too fast, buy the 200s and stick them inside your 100s. You don't want to wait to long to swap your socks because the whole idea of them to me is that they're easy to change, so less time poop stays in your water.
