Did a 50% w/c today and got around to cleaning one of my XP3's. It had been awhile since I cleaned out this particular canister, and because we have the garden hose winterized currently I opted to do the cleaning in the sink.

Good thing too. Usually I dump all the water from the canister into the garden, but this time I couldn't.

As I'm wringing out the last sponge I look over and there in the canister is an inch long L144.

I knew these guys spawned a little while ago, but with all the predators in my tank no fry survived.

Except this guy.

He's now back in the main tank for the first time since he was just a free swimming fry I imagine.

Hope he makes it!

What a nice reward for cleaning a filter!

lol that's awesome

Haha, sounds great.

Cute lil guy :)

Tough lil sucker. I had a ten gallon tank with mollies when I was a kid. My mother took the tank down and we gave the fish to a family friend. This "empty" tank set on our back porch for 3 months. Then one day I noticed a single molly swimming in the rain water that had collected in the tank. Fish are stronger then we give them credit for.
Glad you found the little guy.

That is cool! He had a nice little habitat going there for a little one. I wonder if this effects their eyesight being in complete darkness for so long.

Just had a similar experience. I knew my Boesemani rainbows were spawning in my tank on the regular but the eggs get gobbled up pretty quick. Was going to clean some mulm in the bottom of my sump and noticed a tiny fish darting around. Somehow this fish made it past all the hungry mouths and canister intakes, through the corner overflow, past the filter socks and through my bio media while not getting sucked into the overflow drain in the sump. It was probably his lucky day that I had been lazy and the filter sock was overflowing a week or two beforehand. Now it's growing out in my plant tank.

I often find cherry shrimp in my canisters, but never plecos. Now hob filters are a different story, every month I find at least a few ancistrus living in there

My khuli loach always found his way into HOBS, then to the impellor was his last adventure :(
