they exist , has anyone gone down this path, I am not sure if people are aware of our water restrictions here in australia but this would be awesome for my 240 gal set up hopes.

Do a search for DIY denitrator (sp?) There have been a few thread on people building them.

denitrators do work . . . but I have found plants to be very effective too (assuming your fish won't destroy them)

I would look into a freshwater refugium as well...

They can both do the job. An algae scrubber is more compact if space is an issue. You would need a larger refugium than a typical HOB can provide for an adequate plant nitrate filter.

Two notes on that:

1) If you are growing plants hydroponically (only roots in water) then they are releasing O2 into the air, not the water, so you will still need mechanical oxygenation.

2) Most plants prefer ammonia to nitrites or nitrates, so you may as well skip the bacterial filter and use plants for the whole process.

Plant filters are very effective, the only real drawbacks are the space they take up and the lighting requirements.
