I Had just bought a cool creature called a Reed fish. Iread that they are great escape artists, so i blocked all openings on the top of my tank. Ends up he swam up the pump tube on my filter and drowned himself. So this does not happen in the future, is there a way to block the opening without disrupting the water flow?

i think the reedfish is the same as a ropefish which needs air to breathe(related to bichirs) did it swim up the intake or return? if the intake try tieing a piece of pantyhose to the nozzle. one more thing to clean, but it's cheap and shouldn't mess with the intake flow too much.

The inlet tube on filters and pumps should have a screen on them to prevent animals and large debris from getting sucked thru them. All the manufactures of filters and pumps I am aware of include a pick up tube screen with them, is yours missing? What type of filter do you have? If your missing the pick up tube screen I may have one I could send you. Panty hose is not a good long term solution because it will clog rapidly preventing water flow.

Guess what? Stupid me, I found the piece your speaking of when I removed the strainer from my filter. It was still in the filter from when i bouhgt it. Still new at this, but learning. Thinks for the feedback all.

The reed fish is a freshwater fish i believe from africa. I learned from the internet that they do need to be able to get to air to fill the bladders in there chest. he was about 11 in long so he couldnt turn or back out of the inlet tube. He died from lack of air.

my spiny eel did this... put a stocking over the outlet
