hi guys i've been looking into keeping rays reading books and all your threads,i just wanted to know in your experience of keeping rays what kind of filters are the best for them. just so you guys know i've been keeping malawi cichlids for the past 6 years and wanted to move to the next level, so all advise will be taken in to consideration thanx zakaman

The best types of filters are w/d filters. The most important thing is large amount of bio media and w/d systems will allow for that. Most people seem to use a combination of cannisters and w/d. Im using a w/d, cannister and two HOB power filters along with two internal sponge filters. More importantly is WATER CHANGES!!!

thanx for that, i was thinking along them lines but i thought i might have gone over board with filteration but i guess not. just another quick one air stones a must or can do without?

They seem to like the bubbels tinkeling their bellies.. But whats about it..

my sump is all submerged media.... over 14L worth with a old protien skimmer filled with bio balls(switching to matrix or substrae pro soon) along with a FBF 300.... i did the trickle version and i like this set up alot better.... my filter socks keep the water crystal clear and parameters where always in check..........

Ive got a sump & one emp 400 filter. Ive also got 4 powerheads in this tank Two return pumps in the sump and i just installed a sterilizer on it sunday. The water stays really clear. I also do a good water change once a week. The rays are eating like horses and sheddin like crazy.

thanx guys just need to sell on my malawis and set ups. u guys are all sound as a pound. one more thing how do you work out the size of the return pump from the w/d sump. cheers

its easy but confusing... to do it right you need to find a pump that will flow what you want it too at the head height you have.... if you look in set up and filtration there is stickys that will explain all this....

thanx for that just been and had a look at the sticky a bit mind boggeling but i get the jist of it. i hope to start setting up soon. see you guys soonish .zakaman
