well im thinking of putting a drain in the middle of my pond to suck the water and bring it thru a filter bio balls/floss/foam etc.. and then have the filter pump the water back out thru a waterfall will this work and how many gallons per hour should the pump be???

For ponds, whenever possible, it is a good idea to re-circulate the water once an hour, more often if possible. Thus, if your pond is 500 gallons, try to buy a pump that will re-circulate water at a rate of 500 gallons per hour. For really large ponds, this is not necessary and is far too expensive.

Filtration:
You must first understand that you should have at least a hundred gallons more filtration than actual pond water. This is because although the filter might say that it will work on a pond (lets say) 1400 Gallons, if you pond was 1375 gallons then the 1400 gallon filter would be struggling to work flat out to keep it clean. You can never over filter a pond - so make sure the filter you choose is adequate. If you intend to have a highly stocked Koi pond then you should aim to have a filter to cope with one and a half times the capacity of the water in your pond.

ahhh thank you verymuch.. we will probably be using a pool pump or something for it so im sure that is plenty of filteration.. now i just need some bio balls and foam/thread

What size of filter / sump? (there are several good ones in this forum)

Any permanent residents in the pond?

Pond in the sun?

Nobody home / low sun - 600gph to 800gph (water movement)

A half dozen 3" g.fish / low sun - 800gph to 1000gph

2 dozen g.fish / low sun - 1000gph to 1400gph

3 twelve inch koi a half dozen g.fish / low sun _ 2400gph to 3200gph

Full sun with fish add 1000gph

2 turtles add 1000gph

Lots of leaves and trash getting in - clean it, filter won't help.

If you have water features (spitting fish or frogs) put those on a separate pump and timer or switch and use when needed, so filter can run 24/7/365.

Please note: these are all bare minimums. any and or all can be doubled or tripled with no ill effects.

I got to learn to type faster...nobody was answering when I started typing.

A pool pump is going to have alot of pressure behind it. I'd make a temporary setup to see how far it's going blast your spitting frog. :screwy:

umm theres no fish in it right now and it gets about 5 - 8 hours of sun a day

no clue on the pump size so idk

and can i just fill the freaking filter with spunges that u clean dishes and crap with?

all it is gona be is a waterfall thats decent sized that will drain backinto the pond

No fish...ok. then use scubbies (pot scrubbers) or industrial scrubbing pads for a floor scrubber if you use a 5g bucket or trash can.

Just don't use anything that has a mildewcide in it, some kitchen sponges (the ones that are soft in the package usually) have it.

The reason is you want to have bacteria in the filter.

You can try the pool pump you may just have to shunt part of the water to the pond.
