i have a standard 55 gal with a 7 inch butti , an 6 inch mosiac gar , a 4 inch pike and a 4 inch catfish and a common pleco. I would like upgrade my filteration. i mean i plan on upgrading my tank to a 75 or 90 but in the mean i want better filteration . The filteration i currently have is the emperor 400 . it does 400 gal per hour. Any suggestion on what to up grade to .

keep the emp but add a small canister like a Eheim 2217, that would be more then enough for the 55 and a 90... :D

I'd get an emp over an AC much better filter imo. As far as a cannister you can get xp3's cheap and they work well. A cannister might not be a bad idea.

XP3 from PetSmart for $105

i never liked the emp at all? funny how everyone likes different things. The Aquaclear is easy to clen, cheap for parts replacment, and move a ton of water. i use 2 500 on my 90 gallon, 1 500 and a 300 on my2 55 gallons, and i have 2 FX5's and power heads on my 210 gallon. I personally wish i could put 2 500 {110) AC on my 210 gal but the ero-braces are to wide. I belive you can never have to much filtration just to much agitation for the fish you have to fund a happy medium. The size of your fish in the that tank requires a lot of mechanical along with biological i stick by my earlier remark and recomend a 500 (new name 110) aquaclear there what my dad used in the 1970's and there still going strong.

I agree with some of the above. Since you already have a Emp 400, I would get a small to medium sized canister. A XP2 or XP3 would be perfect. Use the Emp for mechanical filtration and the XP for bio, its a perfect combo.
