I'm picking up a sweet 90G tank tomorrow.

my filter plans include using a canister filter as an all bio filter and a ac100 as an all mechanical filter.

so what type of canister filter do you guys recommend for this setup? and what type of bio media should i stuff it with?

eheim 2217, rena xp3, or fluval 405 are the 3 that are most popular/well reviewed. Eheim ehfisubstrat pro is supposed to be the best biomedia, its reallllly expensive though. Definitely use ceramic media anyway.

Eheim 2217 it will come with everything you need including media (if bought new). You can find them on Ebay for $100-120. It come with the efhisubstrat pro, the mechanical media, a course sponge and a carbon pad and polishing pad. All hoses and quick quick disconnects also. Eheim classic series filters are known to last 10+ years.

scratch the ac110 for mechanical.... i found out the tank does not have room for an ac110, it can fit an ac70 tho.

so should i just go w/ a sump since it has a built in overflow in the middle. i'm a newbie in sumps so a little discouraged.

i have a magnum 350 (good for up to 100g) for over 15 years, non stop running and still going strong and they are not that expensive

For the OP this would not be a good choice since the magnum is not a very efficeint bio filter.
